Club member John Bagshaw, helped by his colleagues Jarrod and Kurt, put on an excellent showing of "Steam on Digital"

It was the first time John had formatted his show full digital, and the first time the club had enjoyed an audio/visual evening digitally by an invited presenter.

The exceptional quality images took the audience all around the British Isles showing many steam and diesel trains operating on the main line. Many of the images not only depicted the trains themselves, but gave excellent panoramic views of the location.

John with his vast knowledge on this subject described the scenes for most of the evening, interspersed with short A/Vs highlighting the true quality of the Clubs recently bought P.A.system and projector.

Thanks John for a great evening.

Its looking like a 3 way race for the line in the advanced section with one round to go. Brian Thearle, Tony Mann and Alan Greaves (making a late dash with an excellent 53pts.on the night) are neck and neck on 149pts. Only 3 points seperate the first 3 in the intermediates, so another tight finish looms.

Derek Doar certainly demonstrated his passion for photography with an excellent showing of his many prints.
Ably assisted by his friend Geoff he entertained a good turnout of members with his many tales and experiences over the years. Derek also gave us lots of tips especially about the ever popular Photoshop.

The previous club meeting on the 24th July saw members bring in their images following the club outing to the Castle Marina back in May.

The evening was also filled in with audio visual DVD's kindly brought in by Tony Mann, Gary Langley and Greg Foster.

With his show entitled "Just clicking Away" Peter Yeo FRPS. presented an amazing selection of prints, and his awareness for a good shot.

The journey took us from Southwell Minster through the streets of Leicester, over to the gondolas in Venice, back to the north and Glencoe, and down to the industrial cities of England. Many images of flowers, aircraft, roadworks and the coast were shown in between these with some Photoshop tips "thrown in"

An excellent turnout of 37 members complemented an enjoyable evening.

Nice one Peter

Armed with some very old plate cameras and superb black and white prints, Paul Bloomer showed us all why he is regarded as one of the most experienced and entertaining photographers on the circuit.
His storys of capturing images for the newspapers, such as drivers at Brands Hatch and a train derailment at Basford Junction, to name two, were fascinating. And his inside shots of Lincoln Cathedral taken on one of his old cameras were stunning.

Because our lecturer for the evening failed to turn up (a very rare thing) our digital projector came in very useful.
Thanks to our Webmaster Greg who hastily fetched and set up the equipment, our members were entertained with a showing of our Images for America, and Images from Rushcliffe Camera Club, kindly loaned by Gary.

This took place on Friday 9th May at Chesterfield Library. 15 clubs were entered and, with each entering 12 prints in the first round, there was plenty to look at!

At the end of the first round, Arnold and District was in fourth place. With 131 points. The leading club was Nottingham and Notts with 135. Seven clubs were knocked out at this stage.

We removed 3 prints that had not scored brilliantly and replaced them and added more to make 15 for the final round.

At the end of the evening we had gained 162 points and came 5th. Nottingham and Notts won the competition with 171 but, between 2nd and 5th position, there were only 3 points difference!

Ilkeston came second with 165 points and they, with Nottingham and Notts, will represent NEMPF in the PAGB competition in October.

John Colmer, from Nottingham and Notts won the best print of the evening.

Unusually for us, we didnt win a raffle prize but all had a very enjoyable, if nerve-wracking, evening!

On the 28th Feb an excellent turnout of 40 members and guests were entertained by Gerald Hall with his stunning wild life images and description of his visit to the Greek island of Lesbos. With his 100% Derbyshire broad accent there were a few scratching their heads, whilst trying to translate into Nottinghomian such sayings as, and I quote "Didyagerroat?" and "Theeyant gorroap innell" (answers next time) but this only added to a most interesting evening with bird sounds and birdwalks included.
Nice one Ged.

Another good turnout on Thursday 13th March where members were engaged in table top photography. Our thanks to Greg, Rex, Eddie and Arthur for setting up their displays and taking time out to help and advise others, especially our new members. A few stated how good it was to "mingle" with each other for a couple of hours, exchanging views and ideas, as apposed to sitting down as an audience as per other evenings.

Photographer Dave Johnston came along with his own special humour on the 24th Jan.to amaze us with his stunning images, followed by the presentation of the NEMPF 2008 accepted slides, on the following Monday. Together with our new P.A.system, Digital Projecter and Lap top, which were in use for the first time altogether, the show was excellent.
Our new equipment was in full use again three days later when the digital images from our U.S.A. friends The Rockford Camera Club were shown. Our own A/V Disc sent to them earlier was also seen, and thanks were given to Webmaster Greg Foster for his excellent editing of both presentations.
Four days later on the 4th Feb. Steve Myall kindly judged our 26th Library Annual Print Competition. Always a mammoth task with no less than 71 images to sort through. He also used our new radio microphone for the first time.
Congratulations go to Margaret Johnson LRPS who came away with the best overall print for 2008 depicting junk mail in a letter box. Strange that judge Steve is a postman by trade! (only teasing Margaret, a worthy winner)

Dave Severn came along with his "traditional" kit of dual projectors and 4 track recorder to entertain us with his show strangely titled "25 Years of Crap"

It was a decent turnout on the night where 25 members enjoyed Daves humour and excellent images and music.
Having set up a similar A/V system a few years ago myself, with a space show, brought back memories of how much was involved in synchronizing all the hardware
Its amazing to think now it can all be done on one disc. Its called technology and is certainly more reliable and less stressful (but not so much fun I feel!)

The club was graced with the presence of Peter Preece from the West Midlands projecting his show called "A beginners Guide to Wildlife Photography"

Setting up his "props" in his own back garden and retreating to his home made hide he has captured many truly stunning images of practically every British bird there is. His shots on location were also excellent and its difficult to see how such images could be bettered on such a difficult subject.

Steve "kicked" off the night briefing us all on the complexity of colour management. Not an easy task, but came through with some sound advice. Hopefully members will see the benefit of this new calibrator in the near future.
Rex then went on to demonstrate the art of mounting our prints at the rear of the hall followed by Ivan who projected his forte of slides featuring his collection of boats.

16 intrepid members braved a cold and blustery night and ventured over to Long Eaton Camera Club to do battle with 25 prints on either side.

This 1st. leg was hosted by club secretary Peter Cheetham APAGB whilst judge Steve Myall had the unenviable task of trying to please everyone.

We had the honour of 1st, 2nd, and 3rd. placings on the night, and with a slender lead of 15 points overall (371-356) going into the second leg in May.

The same 50 prints will then be judged by Bill Hall, and it could go either way.

Results as follows

3rd.Winter Jogger-- Arthur Berrisford.

Our thanks to our hosts for the refreshments and an enjoyable evening, and we look forward to welcoming them to our club on May 10th.07

Well done to Steve Glossop with "Little Buddha" and Gary Langley with "A.J." on winning the coloured and monochrome sections respectively.
Steve won the Bonington Shield outright with best print.

Judge Peter Cheetham APAGB had to sort through 78 prints on the night from 26 authors. A great response from the members, no doubt due to the popularity of digital printing in the home. However this meant they were restricted to just 3 entries each, due to available wall space in the exhibition.

Second place in the monochrome was claimed by Phil Haynes with "Ellie and her Mum" and third place given to Barry Walker with "Under Sail"
Eddie Coxon came second in the colour section with "Shadows" with Gary Langley claiming third with "Orange Tip.Female"

Highly commended prints were as follows
Monochrome-"Lincoln Rooftops" by Phil Haynes.
Coloured Section-"Concentrating Hard" by Sue Dean.
"Tate Modern" by Phil Howcroft.
"St.Paul's Church,Carlton" by Tony Mann.
"Serenity" by Rex Stevenson

A good evening was nicely rounded off by judge Peter displaying his excellent monochrome prints.

In the intermediate section Sarah Davis was placed first with Peter Littlewood nailing 2nd. and 3rd. placings and top of the league on 51 points, 3 points ahead of Sarah.

Full of amusing anecdotes and insights from an area that is now rapidly changing. Brian prefers to use medium format TLR cameras for their quiet and discreet operation. All the work he showed was black and white prints of a very high quality. Some were candid pictures where the subjects were unaware of the camera, however, the majority were taken with permission, but not posed other than at the whim of the subjects. Clearly Brian has mastered the technique of making the subjects forget that he is there and taking pictures. His work has been published in many magazines, papers and also a book.

Eddie Coxon is our expert on Pinhole Photography and this year was persuaded to do something a bit different. He modified his home-made pinhole camera so that he can choose whether to take a single picture or to use a twin pinhole front in order to take stereo (3D) side-by-side pairs. Unfortunately the Pinhole Photograpy website is only set-up for individual images so only the right image of a stereo pair has been posted on the site.

If anyone is interested in finding out more about this, please let me know (Webmaster) and I will see if I can get a short article from Eddie to post on the ADCC website.

The Club season ended in great style with the brilliant "Journey into Space" on Thursday 10th November. A traditional twin projector audio visual show by our own Tony Mann who put in a great performance despite his current battle with illness. An excellent turn out of members and visitors which was repeated for the "Digital Workshop" on Monday 14th November. This showcased the new digital ways of presenting audio visual shows. Presented using a laptop computer and a digital video projector. No surprise that there was plenty of interest and questions. A glimpse of the future of Club shows?

The final Print/Slide Theme competition attracted a large entry of excellent work which caused the judge some problems in selecting the winners. The theme this year was Architecture. Many of the prints were digitally produced And it was clear that the quality of such work is improving.

The Annual General Meeting was well attended on Thursday 8th December and the committee was re-elected with a vote of thanks from the membership. It was noted that 2005 was the first year where membership had reached fifty. For most of the Clubs history membership has been in the mid-thirties and into the low forties for the last 2 to 3 years. The increase in membership seems to be down to this website doing its job and promoting our activities and also the resurgence of photography now we are in the digital age. Clearly digital work (or I should say Good digital work) is not as easy as the manufacturers and media would have us believe.

The now traditional Christmas Social and Prize Giving on Monday 12th December went well with lots of certificates and trophies awarded for the many competitions held in 2005.

It is hoped that the Club will continue to build on recent successes and have a great 2006. The professionally printed programme was very well received with the inclusion of more quality, colour images. Further increases to the size of the programme booklet will be considered although the costs of this might mean the need for advertiser support. The committee will look at the costs and would prefer to keep the booklet advert free.

In particular the committee hope that the "Awards for All" bid is successful in 2006 so that the Club is able to purchase much needed digital equipment to support our membership and programme of activities.

We welcome all our existing members and potential members back in the NEW YEAR.

Many of the aspects and style of the old site have been retained, however, we have vowed to ensure that this time updates, maintenance and certainly news will be uploaded much more frequently. More importantly your messages will not just disappear and remain unanswered as in the past.

Please note that the old site still exists but we are unable to close, update, forward mail or retain the registered domain name without a lot of expense and legal aid. Apart from a very late (September) posting of the 2002 programme no updates have been made in over 2 years!

This new site is the culmination of many, many hours of committee discussion, not to mention many hours of work on my part since this is my first attempt at creating a website.

On behalf of the Club I hope that you find the content interesting, particularly the galleries. Please let us have any comments or criticisms so that we can keep your interest and also improve the site.

A large entry of prints in both Intermediate and Advanced categories. An interesting mix of traditional and digitally printed images. As usual a good selection of both colour and mono prints were keenly judged.

Winning entries were submitted by Frank Eyre, Malcolm Reed and Mike Hall.

Due to the efforts of Tony and Greg, this evening saw the inaugural use of our new powered screen. The members were suitably impressed with this dramatic improvement over our old screen which was much smaller and time worn. At 2.2 metres square this will certainly do justice to the many slides we see projected, particularly those in medium format.

It is clear from the entry numbers and the quality of the slides that our members in both the intermediates and advanced leagues are all out to impress this year.

A truly horrific evening in which some committee members were singled out for presenting some stupendously bad pictures. All in good fun and some common pitfalls were well and truly highlighted.

No names, but the best (worst?) shot of the evening was of a ladybird taking off. This was so surreal that we were forced to take an unexpected intermission whilst the audience recovered their composure. Maybe I will be able to persuade the author to let me reproduce it here for your edification, albeit anonymously.

Prizes were presented to the authors of the three worst pictures of the evening.

Let me know if you would like to see a series on 'How not to do it'.

A significant improvement in size and quality compared to our present screen.

Our thanks go to Peter Cheetham APAGB of Long Eaton Camera Club for supplying us with a suitable double rocker switch and wiring diagram.

Malcolm showed us the superb quality slides that can be taken with Bronica cameras especially if you are prepared to get up very early to watch the sun come up or stay late for the sunset. Fitness and dedication are essential for this style of landscape work particularly since the winter months are frequently the most rewarding. Malcolm has published several books as well as being the author of articles in photography magazines.

A well attended night with a very closely fought battle in the advanced workers section. Even the intermediates section had some excellent slides and thanks to an influx of keen new members a reasonable number of slides were entered. The evening finished late due to our efforts to select the best for the upcoming NEMPF slide competition which will be held in the Bonnington Theatre in Arnold on Sunday 9th March.

Our own ex-chairperson Rita Marsden presented her prints on the theme of Refections in the second half. Rita commented on the reasons and ideas behind her work and made it clear to us all that theme working, even extended over a number of years can result in a good panel of images. It is gratifying that more members are coming forward to give slide shows or print presentations to share their skills and techniques.
