Geoff, aided by his wife Margaret began with scenes from Japan featuring wildlife such as cranes, fox, monkeys in their hot streams, swan hoopers and one of his favourite birds the sea eagle. Next stop Lesbos where we saw rare orchid species, little egret, sandpiper, little bittern, nuthatch, terns to name but a few. He ended the first half with shots from his own back garden such as sparrowhawk, elephant hawk moth and butterflies. The best was still to be seen, as for part two Geoff presented some excellent images from his five day trip to the Masai Mara in Kenya. Capturing the amazing migrating wilderbeast with stunning shots, he proceeded with lots more wildlife such as lions, leopard, bee-eaters, kingfisher, fish eagle and wood owl. The back end of his show concluded with elephants, antelope, yellow bill stork, lapwing and white rhino in Botswana, and scenes around the Victoria Falls in Zambia. Together with many tales of his experiences, and conservationist ideas, Geoff was rewarded with much deserved applause from a good turnout of members. ed.tm. Keith Hucknall and Tim Miles-Hayler gave out invaluable tips and ideas on the uses of flash photography. With hands on equipment they both showed and explained the "ins and outs" of this sometimes difficult field, including basic flash on Nikon and Canon, bounce flash, TTl flash, flash off camera, wireless via infra red, and high speed usage. Many members brought along their own equipment, which was good to see, and were seen engaging in small groups exchanging advice. As well as projecting images of many rock samples, industrial scanners and printers, he took us on a journey to many destinations depicting geological features. These included Eastbourne, South Downs, and Scarborough landslips. His experiences in Afghanistan were of particular interest following recent history. Paul is also a qualified pilot and treated us to various aerial shots including Nottingham. Our thanks to Paul who came in as a late "booking" and put on a very interesting and humorous presentation. Despite a cold evening, a pleasing 38 members and guests turned up for this years social night. The usual picture quiz kept most in deep thought prior to an excellent buffet, the presentations for 2011 by Chairman Dave Hollingsworth, and finally the raffle. There were many images from the famous Route 66 together with shots of what is one of Alans passions, abandoned cars and trucks, many of which were taken on a 17mm.lens. Various members brought along mono prints for discussion on the 22nd. Sept. followed by a projected display to complete the evening. There was a good turnout of 30 members and guests. Chairman Dave "kicked" off the evening on the 29th Sept. with a projected explanation of exposure settings and Photoshop tips for this practical session. It was pleasing to see various cameras brought along by the members to assist in a Q/A conclusion. A 2 hour limit never seems enough for practical events like this but hopefully we all managed to go away with a little more knowledge. Thanks to all the members who helped these two evenings flow along so well. Around 15 members plus one or two guests enjoyed the freedom of the yard for two hours in ideal weather conditions. Six models (male and female) were in attendance (see images attached) giving many opportunities to photograph something different amongst the wreckage. Marlies opened her garden, to all those interested, to come along and practice their macro skills on her many flowers and plants. Taking care not to trip over the many tripod legs abound there was scope for many a good image. Bev Ward explained to a good size audience the highs and lows of the work involved in gaining her LRPS. She described the many rules involved in submitting the required standard, and what a thrill it was to reach this goal following her hard work. Bev brought along her own photo books to view and went on to show the members how to do likewise with a digital projection of the software. Yours truly "kicked" off the evening with a display of my early prints, mostly black and white images developed in my old darkroom. Rex Stevenson set up his tabletop and described his methods of reproducing the image "Back to the Future" from the front cover of the programme. Both Steve Glossop and Dave Hollingsworth gave a lecture on their Photoshop skills, whilst Margaret Johnson showed an A/V of one of her many holiday journeys. Phil Howcroft also showed an excellent A/V in his own style, and Greg Foster ended the evening handing out 3D glasses to view some of his recent stereoscopic images. The evening also saw the presentations to the winners of this years Annual Print Exhibition. Barry Walker was the recipient of the Bonington Shield for 2011 with his Monochrome print "Stone Mason" whilst Verity Assad and Bob Richards received their certificates as joint winners in the coloured section. Amazingly close when you consider the final scores as Arnold 832pts. and Rushcliffe 824 pts. Displayed by Howard Bagshaw ARPS.DPAGB. from Little Haywood in Staffordshire, we were thrilled by viewing some of his many short projects. Howard commenced with his coverage of the annual Tough Guy Challenge from Wolverhampton, depicting stunning images together with background sound of the actual event. He then moved on to Sudersuit in Iceland followed by Loch Lomond and Scottish Reflections, with equal excellent quality. Having researched photographer Dorethea Lenge in the Library Congress, Howard used some of her many images of the American depression back in 1936 to tell a very moving and informative tale. Inspired by the famous image of the Migrant Mother, he won a gold medal in an RPS competition with this A/V albeit with another authors work. Howard uses Picture to Exe. and Photoshp CS3 for his projects together with the free Audacity for the audio. He ended the evening with another moving A/V showing the many skills of the children at the Walton Hall Special School in Staffordshire, whilst studying their performing arts. Our thanks to Howard, who received much acclaim at the end of the evening, and we look forward to seeing him and his wife Carole back in the future with more of his excellent work. ed.tm. They posed tirelessly throughout the evening in the two lighting sets, one at each end of the room. With only a couple of hours to shoot it obviously limits each member to a short time, but viewing some images later, it seemed good results were obtained. A good turnout of 29 members attended a very interesting and informative meeting on the 9th Dec.chaired by David Hollingsworth. They were briefed on the healthy position of their club going into a new season, together with fresh ideas to think over. The Committee were elected and member Margaret Johnson was welcomed on board. Another very good turnout attended the annual social evening, despite the cold weather, and enjoyed the usual popular picture quiz, raffle and tasty buffet. The evening ended with the presentation of the 2010 trophies and certificates to the successful members, followed by a surprise excellent singing performance by model Laura. Club Webmaster Greg Foster put together an excellent second showing to address this with his event "More 3D" in front of a large audience. Wearing the appropriate dark glasses we were treated to some amazing viewing in his collection of various images. Greg also demonstrated the art by shooting a table top subject and transferring this to the software. Together with a QandA session and a projection of some light-hearted A/Vs it all transcended into a very interesting evening, leaving members to ponder over a possible other angle to try in their much loved hobby. Despite this plenty of past slides were brought in by the few and a very entertaining evening was had. Still a good projected slide holds its own against present digital format The final Digital round saw Alan Greaves score 20 points with Dave Hollingsworth and Tony Mann on 19 points for the evening. With each members best 3 scores added to the League it transpired that Mike Pointon and Alan Greaves had both acclaimed a total of 199 points, and so share the title. Tony Mann follows just 3 points adrift then Dave Hollingsworth on 191 points. Sandy Saunders scored 20 points on the night for the Intermediates with Marlies Chell a close second on 19 points. This means that Sandy has taken the title by the narrowest of margins,one point, from Mike Owden. Marlies in third place on 193 points just 6 behind the leader. We all know a lot more about Phil now after this personal insight into his life, like where he shops, how he tends his attractive garden, which bus he catches, and even what washing he puts out on his line. Aided by his wife Helen on the projector, Stephen Wilkes from Worcestershire presented an excellent show entitled "Africa and Australasia" In the first part of the evening he showed many images of wild life and landscapes from Nmibia and around Capetown Sth.Africa from 2005. His shots of the magnificent dunes particularly standing out. The journey continued in the second half through New Zealand, 2009, via backpacking hostels, depicting glaciers, harbours, lagoons, vineyards along with stunning images of the West coast. In the North island locations we saw art deco and cobbled streets contrasted by volcanic areas and geezers. We were able to display over 30 prints as well as showing many digital images on our new frame. A couple of members had potential sales with their entries and the hope of a few new members is good. Much care was taken not to divulge answers as groups "clashed" during the walkabout. Strange really as this was not a competition! Thats photographers for you! Two weeks later all the images were projected, much to the amusement of the audience. Ably supported by his own attractive model he described certain shots and poses using dedicated flash, downloading each image to a large flat TV screen, enabling the members and guests to view closely. In the second half of the evening Bob projected many digital portrait images on to our large screen giving lots of tips and advice to a captive assembly. The event again showed the depth of knowledge we are blessed with amongst the members, and we only hope it will spur on others to do likewise in the future. John and his "buddies" have travelled the country chasing these trains for a long time now and must have one of the best collections of images on the circuit. Steve with his talk called "Whats all this "stop" stuff anyway?" took the audience back to the early days of photography, and with his excellent descriptions on screen, explained the difficult subject of exposures. With Photoshop having such a "minefield" of dos and donts, Dave showed the members his methods of working an image through the many options at hand. His talk called "Photoshop My Way" gave lots of good ideas and hints for all to try. Here again not an easy subject to explain, and as with Steve also, the best and only way to digest their explanations is to spend lots of time "having a go" Many thanks to Steve and Dave for an excellent evening. Frank pointed out that he doesnt go out looking for a certain image but waits till something appears that appeals to him. He insisted that taking a good photograph should come from the head and the heart rather than just pointing and shooting, and having patience till that special scene appears. Frank was a keen dark room worker pre digital producing superb colour as well as black and white prints. Pleased to hear he is carrying on with digital work and we look forward to viewing more of his images in the future. Phil particularly likes the black and white finish and demonstrated how an image can be greatly improved with this option, together with careful cropping. His astute candid shots of the public in daily life were especially brave, in these frustrating times of crazy rules, prohibiting photography. As a member in the audience rightly pointed out "How else can a library of our local history be captured for posterity?" Our thanks to Phil, who received a very warm and deserved applause at the end of an interesting show. This included the common garden birds to the frogs and toads in Darley Dale and Great Crested Newt, where a licence is required to shoot. Then on to the reptiles like green lizards and slow-worms before showing amazing images of orchids pansies, cowslip and fungi. In the second half of the evening we saw excellent shots from the insect world such as spiders, dragonfly, damselfly, cranefly, bees, wasps and honeyflies. Tony ended his show with a variety of butterflies, moths, beetles, ladybirds and an unusual shot of a cranefly caught in a Venus Flytrap. Despite perfect weather for the outing at Attenborough Nature Reserve, the mosquitoes had the last laugh as virtually every member returned home with a series of bites. Disappointingly the main centre was closed, and all the hides were shut up for the day. An excellent turnout of 20+ made the effort to attend, where perhaps the venue was too large to cover in what is a very short shooting time. We will have to take this on board for next year when possibly a smaller location would be more suitable. Roberts show entitled "Our Wonderful World" started with shots taken in the Peak District, depicting his favourite themes, Trees, Water and Snow. Then over the border to the Scottish lochs and rare views of the Isle of Staffa (Fingals Cave) Isle of Mull, and Rannoch Moor. An excellent following of 16 members saw judge Howard Fisher (Keyworth C.C.) award Arnold with 387 points and Rushcliffe 363 points. There were 25 prints from each club and the best print of the night was entered by Arnold member Louise Walton. SOME BLACK TAPE! AND A COCOA TIN! With little more than listed above, club member Eddie Coxon demonstrated how to take unique images during his lecture, called "Pinhole Cameras and Zone Plate Photography" This was the third meeting in a row where club members have fronted the audience, showing the depth of knowledge we are fortunate to have within the Club. Eddie passed around many prints taken locally, together with his simple but effective basic apparatus of cardboard boxes,cocoa tin, and home-made pin hole lens. He then talked about Zone Plate photography giving a "different" image, with concentric rings on a piece of film acting as the lens. Basically, he told us, a pinhole camera is a light-tight box with a tiny hole in one end, and film or photographic paper in the other. Exposures are long, ranging from half a second to several hours. Images are exposed on film, or paper-negative or positive; black and white, or colour. The results are softer-less sharp-than pictures made with a lens. WOW! UNBELIEVABLE! These were some of the descriptions heard during Greg Fosters rescheduled 3D show. With all members wearing special dark glasses, looking more prepared for the sunny beach, he projected a collection of stunning images, beginning with a host of shots from Arnold in Bloom. The flower heads seemed to reach right out to the viewer and able to touch. Greg also included views from his recent holiday in Canada, Southwell Minster, and some incredible b/w pioneering stereoscopic images from the 1920s/30s featuring mountain climbers. The RAW image is transferred to a personal computer where suitable software is used to adjust the image as needed. From the RAW image, the software can develop and generate the adjusted image in the desired type such as JPEG or TIFF. As Geoff pointed out, working in RAW prior to Photoshop enables one to greatly enhance the image AS TAKEN as opposed to the camera processing the image for us. Geoff ended the evening projecting images, with common faults, testing the audience to locate the problem and apply a correction. At the end of the first round, Arnold and District was in fourth place. With 131 points. The leading club was Nottingham and Notts with 135. Seven clubs were knocked out at this stage. We removed 3 prints that had not scored brilliantly and replaced them and added more to make 15 for the final round. At the end of the evening we had gained 162 points and came 5th. Nottingham and Notts won the competition with 171 but, between 2nd and 5th position, there were only 3 points difference! Ilkeston came second with 165 points and they, with Nottingham and Notts, will represent NEMPF in the PAGB competition in October. John Colmer, from Nottingham and Notts won the best print of the evening. Unusually for us, we didnt win a raffle prize but all had a very enjoyable, if nerve-wracking, evening! Photographer Dave Johnston came along with his own special humour on the 24th Jan.to amaze us with his stunning images, followed by the presentation of the NEMPF 2008 accepted slides, on the following Monday. Together with our new P.A.system, Digital Projecter and Lap top, which were in use for the first time altogether, the show was excellent. Our new equipment was in full use again three days later when the digital images from our U.S.A. friends The Rockford Camera Club were shown. Our own A/V Disc sent to them earlier was also seen, and thanks were given to Webmaster Greg Foster for his excellent editing of both presentations. Four days later on the 4th Feb. Steve Myall kindly judged our 26th Library Annual Print Competition. Always a mammoth task with no less than 71 images to sort through. He also used our new radio microphone for the first time. Hopefully members will see the benefit of this new calibrator in the near future. Rex then went on to demonstrate the art of mounting our prints at the rear of the hall followed by Ivan who projected his forte of slides featuring his collection of boats. Treasurer Tony was next up digitally projecting a nine minute video of the Red Arrows shot in 2005 accompanied with the music Tocatta by Sky. This 1st. leg was hosted by club secretary Peter Cheetham APAGB whilst judge Steve Myall had the unenviable task of trying to please everyone. We had the honour of 1st, 2nd, and 3rd. placings on the night, and with a slender lead of 15 points overall (371-356) going into the second leg in May. A great response from the members, no doubt due to the popularity of digital printing in the home. However this meant they were restricted to just 3 entries each, due to available wall space in the exhibition. Second place in the monochrome was claimed by Phil Haynes with "Ellie and her Mum" and third place given to Barry Walker with "Under Sail" Eddie Coxon came second in the colour section with "Shadows" with Gary Langley claiming third with "Orange Tip.Female" Highly commended prints were as follows Monochrome-"Lincoln Rooftops" by Phil Haynes. In the intermediate section Sarah Davis was placed first with Peter Littlewood nailing 2nd. and 3rd. placings and top of the league on 51 points, 3 points ahead of Sarah. Full of amusing anecdotes and insights from an area that is now rapidly changing. Brian prefers to use medium format TLR cameras for their quiet and discreet operation. All the work he showed was black and white prints of a very high quality. Some were candid pictures where the subjects were unaware of the camera, however, the majority were taken with permission, but not posed other than at the whim of the subjects. Clearly Brian has mastered the technique of making the subjects forget that he is there and taking pictures. He modified his home-made pinhole camera so that he can choose whether to take a single picture or to use a twin pinhole front in order to take stereo (3D) side-by-side pairs. Unfortunately the Pinhole Photograpy website is only set-up for individual images so only the right image of a stereo pair has been posted on the site. A traditional twin projector audio visual show by our own Tony Mann who put in a great performance despite his current battle with illness. An excellent turn out of members and visitors which was repeated for the "Digital Workshop" on Monday 14th November. This showcased the new digital ways of presenting audio visual shows. Presented using a laptop computer and a digital video projector. No surprise that there was plenty of interest and questions. A glimpse of the future of Club shows? The final Print/Slide Theme competition attracted a large entry of excellent work which caused the judge some problems in selecting the winners. The theme this year was Architecture. Many of the prints were digitally produced And it was clear that the quality of such work is improving. The Annual General Meeting was well attended on Thursday 8th December and the committee was re-elected with a vote of thanks from the membership. It was noted that 2005 was the first year where membership had reached fifty. For most of the Clubs history membership has been in the mid-thirties and into the low forties for the last 2 to 3 years. The increase in membership seems to be down to this website doing its job and promoting our activities and also the resurgence of photography now we are in the digital age. Clearly digital work (or I should say Good digital work) is not as easy as the manufacturers and media would have us believe. The now traditional Christmas Social and Prize Giving on Monday 12th December went well with lots of certificates and trophies awarded for the many competitions held in 2005. It is hoped that the Club will continue to build on recent successes and have a great 2006. The professionally printed programme was very well received with the inclusion of more quality, colour images. Further increases to the size of the programme booklet will be considered although the costs of this might mean the need for advertiser support. The committee will look at the costs and would prefer to keep the booklet advert free. In particular the committee hope that the "Awards for All" bid is successful in 2006 so that the Club is able to purchase much needed digital equipment to support our membership and programme of activities. A truly horrific evening in which some committee members were singled out for presenting some stupendously bad pictures. All in good fun and some common pitfalls were well and truly highlighted. No names, but the best (worst?) shot of the evening was of a ladybird taking off. This was so surreal that we were forced to take an unexpected intermission whilst the audience recovered their composure. Maybe I will be able to persuade the author to let me reproduce it here for your edification, albeit anonymously. Prizes were presented to the authors of the three worst pictures of the evening. Fitness and dedication are essential for this style of landscape work particularly since the winter months are frequently the most rewarding. Margaret impressed us all with her very informative commentary throughout her show. Our own ex-chairperson Rita Marsden presented her prints on the theme of Refections in the second half. Rita commented on the reasons and ideas behind her work and made it clear to us all that theme working, even extended over a number of years can result in a good panel of images.
